Lauren Barrett, PhD LPC ATR-BC
Licensed Professional Counselor

Becoming a parent and/or experiencing traumatic loss are some of the most complex life events one can have. This change can evoke unexpected conflicting emotions, fears and uncertainty, a new identity, and relational stress. My focus is to therapeutically support mothers and their families during pregnancy, postpartum, and reproductive health experiences including infertility, fertility treatments, birth trauma, miscarriage, and loss. My clinical approach is grounded in combining trauma-informed evidence-based practices and clinical knowledge of perinatal mental health to individualize patient care during this delicate time.

My specializations include perinatal/postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, grief and trauma related to reproductive health, infant loss and miscarriage, birth trauma, transitions in relational dynamics, and navigating a new identity after baby. Additionally, I have experience working with people with autism, OCD, depression, and personality disorders.

I am a board-certified creative arts therapist and have been licensed since 2012. I received my BA from Mercyhurst University, MS from Nazareth College of Rochester, and PhD from Lesley University with a qualitative research focus on mothers of color navigating the healthcare system using art therapy. My most recent clinical experience has been working at Women’s Behavioral Health within AHN with mothers and infants during the perinatal and postpartum periods supporting women’s reproductive health. Within the perinatal/postpartum population, I have focused on mothers of color and believe in culturally sensitive, anti-oppressive practices in healthcare. I am a LGBTQ+ ally and my pronouns are she/her.

The main therapeutic goal is to create a comforting supportive space for both mothers, their families, and grieving parents to better understand what this life change means to them. One's personal reproductive health experiences are extremely important and deserve to be respected in a compassionate, ethical, and professional manner.
